Historic Charm and Seasonal Craft
Boringdon Hall Hotel in Plymouth, Devon offers a refined Afternoon Tea served in the striking surroundings of a 16th-century manor house. Situated near Dartmoor National Park, this Grade I listed hotel provides a memorable setting with its grand fireplaces, historic wood panelling, and relaxed, elegant atmosphere. Afternoon Tea is available daily and combines classic flavours with seasonal creativity, making it a highlight of the hotel’s dining experience.
Traditional Afternoon Tea
Boringdon’s Traditional Afternoon Tea is served between 1:00 PM and 4:00 PM and features a carefully curated selection of savouries, scones, and sweets. Guests begin with freshly made finger sandwiches, typically including combinations such as smoked salmon with dill crème fraîche, ham and mustard, and egg mayonnaise with cress.
Next, guests enjoy warm plain and fruit scones served with clotted cream and preserves. The patisserie selection changes seasonally, but may include rich chocolate tarts, flavoured macarons, and individual cakes with inventive decoration and flavour pairings. Items such as the “Poppins Hat” tart or “Jolly Holiday” opera cake demonstrate the playful yet refined presentation Boringdon is known for.
Themed and Seasonal Teas
Boringdon Hall regularly introduces themed Afternoon Teas inspired by cultural events, seasonal ingredients, and special occasions. These menus are designed to appeal to returning guests as well as new visitors looking for something unique.
For example, the “Practically Perfect” Afternoon Tea ran in early spring and drew inspiration from a much-loved film, with desserts themed around elements from the story and an emphasis on fun, colour and theatrical presentation. Similarly, their “Honey Afternoon Tea” celebrates World Bee Day with honey-based savouries, desserts, and pastries incorporating locally sourced honey and spring produce.
Vegan and Gluten-Free Options
Guests with dietary requirements can request vegan or gluten-free versions of Afternoon Tea. The vegan offering might include items such as a Moroccan cauliflower tart, raspberry longbar, and chocolate mousse. The gluten-free version features alternatives for both savouries and sweets, such as a goat’s cheese and onion tart or pistachio slice. These versions are created with the same care as the main menu and must be pre-booked.
Champagne Upgrade and Prices
Afternoon Tea can be paired with a glass of Laurent-Perrier Champagne for an additional touch of indulgence. Whether you choose the classic La Cuvée Brut or the Rosé, the upgrade is a popular option for guests celebrating birthdays, anniversaries, or simply wanting to enjoy a more leisurely afternoon.
Prices start from £35 per person, with upgrades available.

Reviews

We chose the themed 'Aladdin' afternoon tea, which we thought would be a bit of fun. It was excellent! The sandwiches and savoury bites were delicious and the scones were lovely, warm, soft, tasty.

Just returned from a one night stay and I already want to return. From the moment we arrived, we were treated like royalty. The food in the Mayflower Brasserie was fantastic and breakfast 5*.

We spend a fair bit of time on the look out for decent afternoon teas, with an almost equal balance between an impressive or period setting and a delicate tasty and well presented assembly of the classic components occasionally with a contemporary take.

We’ve just had the most wonderful stay at Boringdon. Everything was perfect. The attention to detail and incredible customer service, were second to none. The food was out of this world exquisite!!

Took my husband to this restaurant for afternoon tea as a birthday treat. Disappointing food selections and service was pretty slow. At £29.95 per person you would have expected something really special but it certainly wasn't.
