The Palm Court at The Plaza Hotel is one of New York’s most iconic destinations for afternoon tea. With its rich history, stained-glass dome, and ornate design, the venue exudes timeless sophistication. From socialites and authors to travellers and families, the space welcomes a broad mix of guests, all seeking a refined yet welcoming setting to enjoy a treasured ritual.
A Selection of Afternoon Tea Experiences
The Palm Court’s afternoon tea offering includes several curated options to suit different tastes and occasions.
The Signature Afternoon Tea is a classic presentation of traditional fare. Guests are served an assortment of elegant finger sandwiches like smoked salmon with dill crème fraîche, curried chicken salad, and cucumber with mint cream cheese accompanied by warm, freshly baked scones with Devonshire cream, lemon curd, and house-made preserves.
The pastry selection changes seasonally but typically includes bite-sized tartlets, eclairs, and fruit-forward confections, all crafted to be as visually impressive as they are flavourful.
For a more elevated experience, the Grand Imperial Tea includes all of the above with the addition of Ossetra caviar and a glass of Champagne. This is a popular choice for anniversaries, birthdays, or simply those who want the most luxurious option available.
Tea Selection and Service
Afternoon tea at The Palm Court is served with your choice of tea from the renowned Palais des Thés collection. The tea menu features a range of black, green, oolong, and herbal infusions, with options like Darjeeling, Earl Grey, Thé du Hammam, and Rooibos Vanilla. Guests are guided through the selection by attentive staff who are happy to recommend pairings.
Presentation and service are key elements of the experience here. Teapots are replenished regularly, and each course is served with a quiet attentiveness that allows the conversation to take centre stage.
The Eloise Tea for Younger Guests
For families visiting The Plaza, the Eloise Afternoon Tea is a thoughtful addition. Inspired by the fictional character who famously “lives” at the hotel, this playful menu is designed for children and includes items like mini grilled cheese sandwiches, cupcakes, and pink lemonade, all served with a child-friendly version of the tiered tea set.
The experience offers a memorable introduction to the tradition of afternoon tea, while still maintaining the charm and elegance of the venue.
Atmosphere and Booking
The Palm Court’s décor features towering palms, mirrored finishes, and soft lighting beneath a grand stained-glass dome. It’s an environment that balances grandeur with a surprising sense of calm. Though it’s a popular venue, the space is never rushed. Afternoon tea is served daily from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and reservations are strongly recommended.
Whether you’re celebrating a special occasion or simply pausing in the heart of Manhattan, The Palm Court delivers an afternoon tea that is equal parts tradition and spectacle.
